What Surprised Me on My First Canada & New England Cruise

royal caribbean new england cruise

Marvel at the beaux-art landmark — and recreate your favorite movie scene filmed at the famed location. Or check out the iconic 77-story Chrysler Building, a true art deco masterpiece. And be sure to stop by the Flatiron Building, one of the first steel-frame skyscrapers in the world. Here are 11 of the best cruises to Canada and New England to consider. When visiting Boston, the easiest way to get around is by the subway or "the T" as the locals call it. Experience the sights, sounds and flavors of the cities where America got her start.

NEW ENGLAND CRUISES

royal caribbean new england cruise

The appeal of vibrant fall foliage, watching excursions and lobster bakes draw many to these cruises. The chance to see quaint towns, enjoy terrific seafood, and take in nature's beauty without the Caribbean heat are at the heart of why many try a cruise going north. Considered the cultural capital of the U.S., New York City has close to one hundred must-see museums to choose from.

This is a beer lover's dream cruise

Some of Royal Caribbean's New England cruises go as far north as Quebec and St. John's in Canada, giving you the full experience of the Atlantic coast, including the world’s famous New York City. From stylish Quebec City to the north, to the idyllic coast of Maine and the historic streets of Boston, there's always something a new thing to do on a New England cruise. You can't miss taking in the sights of Acadia National Park in Maine during your vacation. Known as the Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast, it's no wonder 3.3 million people visit every year.

Boston was super easy to sail from

However, the region's photogenic landscapes, charming ports and fresh local seafood make time ashore uniquely enjoyable for couples and families. Plus, late summer and early fall getaways can be convenient and affordable, especially if you already live on the East Coast. Celebrity Cruises is offering its 11-night Boston, Maine & Canada itinerary on four late August and September dates in 2024 and another four in 2025. The disadvantage of summer is it's the peak part of the season, and there will be multiple cruise ships in each port along with plenty of land tourists to contend with. For upscale, door-to-door, all-inclusive cruising to New England and Canada, Silversea Cruises offers itineraries on a wide selection of summer and fall dates. The most comprehensive trip is a 12-night New York-to-Quebec City itinerary in summer 2024 aboard the 388-passenger Silver Shadow.

THE MAINE EVENT

International culture and cuisine await you in Queens, while wineries and beaches speckle Long Island. Or stop in Hoboken, a pedestrian-friendly town where you can stroll along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway across from Manhattan’s glimmering skyline. When you choose to apply (and are approved) for a new credit card through our site, we may receive compensation from our partners, and this may impact how or where these products appear. Please view our advertising policy and product review methodology for more information. While cruise fares are not all-inclusive, passengers can pay a daily fee for a package that includes unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, as well as Wi-Fi and crew gratuities.

There was not only more walking space, but a full sofa and a blue chair and ottoman that I used as my office every day. If you went to a bar, there was a nearly overwhelming selection of local beers and I loved it. Royal Caribbean's onboard beer selection is underwhelming, especially if you like hoppier beers. The best part of this was because we had gone through the immigration process in Bar Harbor, we didn't have to go through it again at the end of the cruise in Boston. Because our cruise began in the United States, then went to Canada, and then returned to a US port midway through the cruise, we had to go through immigration on our visit to Bar Harbor. Every cruise I've taken up until now would have the immigration process occur at the conclusion of the cruise, but this time was different.

By picking a 7-night or longer Canada & New England, you'll get to visit ports in both Maine and Canada, and have access to more of the must-see sights this region is known for. What you will want to do when getting ready to pack for your cruise is keep track on the forecast, and try to see what the predictions are in the days leading up to your sailing. Sightseeing in Manhattan excites and amazes like nowhere else— and every neighborhood presents a fascinating, unique personality. New York cruises allow you to experience it all— by tour bus, subway, or on foot.

Cruise to New England and wind your way through cobblestone streets dotted with antique lampposts and colonial homes. Take a trip to Maine and hike your way through Acadia National Park, known for it's stunning granite cliffs and rocky beaches along the Atlantic coastline. Then make your way further south to the old seaside town of Portland, a haven for artists, foodies and water lovers alike. Walk the Freedom Trail in Boston to learn about the American Revolution in the very places it began. Overnights in Quebec City and Portland give passengers more time to explore on land and enjoy regional cuisine in local restaurants for dinner. Some itineraries will swap the extra day in Portland for one in Bar Harbor or add a stop in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

Each of the six states that comprise the region is unique, but New England's shared history can be felt in both its small towns and its bustling cities. Take a trip to Maine and hike your way through Acadia National Park, known for its stunning granite cliffs and rocky beaches along the Atlantic coastline. Liberty of the Seas® is your gateway to the postcard-perfect pink-hued shores of Bermuda.

Sailings call on Quebec City, Gaspe and Cap-aux-Meules in Quebec; Louisbourg and Halifax in Nova Scotia; and Portland in Maine. Regent Seven Seas Cruises' newest ship, the 750-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur, debuted in late 2023. In fall 2024, it will sail a series of Canada and New England itineraries from New York and Boston, as well as Montreal. Take advantage of New England's coastal locales by diving into some lobster rolls, oysters and clam chowder. Once you've had your fill of raw delicacies, indulge in the many fried options that the area has to offer, from donuts and cannolis to plentiful French fries. Try to wake up for sunrise when you're sailing along the coast for beautiful views of the Atlantic.

If you're in Bar Harbor and other ports in Maine, order a lobster roll. Maine and the Maritime Provinces are the capital of sourcing lobster, and it's why you need to eat lobster on this cruise. Depending on how much rain the region gets, along with how hot summer is, will determine when the leaves start changing. You risk going when the leaves haven't changed yet or get there after they're mostly on the ground. You'll need to book a cruise in September or October to enjoy the autumn feel and colors of the leaves.

I had put off a Canada and New England cruise for years because it seemed like a secondary itinerary, but I wish I had done it sooner. By taking an early or mid summer cruise, you will find very comfortable temperatures on your cruise. Unlike a Caribbean cruise that is going to be hot and probably sunny, one week in Canada can have very different weather to the next one. While a Canada and New England cruise might not be the most sought-after cruise itinerary, it's worth trying at least once. Stand among skyscrapers at one of New York’s scenic observation decks.

No matter where in the world you choose to wander, cruises can take you deep into top-rated cruise ports and off-the-beaten-path gems, so you can experience each one like a local. The 11-night Fall Season Colors sailing on Oct. 1, 2024, is timed to allow passengers to enjoy regional foliage at its peak as the ship sails from Boston to Montreal. Grandeur calls on Portland, Maine; Saint John, New Brunswick; Sydney, Nova Scotia; Corner Brook, Newfoundland; and Havre-Saint-Pierre, Sept-Iles, Saguenay and Quebec City in Quebec. The overnight in Quebec City also offers an opportunity to enjoy one of Canada's most charming cities after dark.

17 Exciting Things To Do From The Sitka Cruise Port

things to do in sitka alaska from cruise ship

The port is a favorite among smaller ships from upscale lines like Oceania, Silversea, and Regent Seven Seas, among others. Right near the shuttle drop-off and visitor center is the Crescent Harbor where a lot of small boats are docked. It was around a 15 minute shuttle ride from the Sitka cruise port to town.

What Are the Cruise Lines That Offer Routes to Sitka, Alaska?

Unfortunately, most Alaskan cruises sail well before these dates, so you might not be able to see any whales while in Sitka, Alaska. But you’ll likely be able to see plenty of sea lines, harbor seals, and sometimes sea otters. Sitka National Historical Park is the oldest national park in Alaska and is within walking distance of downtown Sitka. The park covers 113 acres and is the site of the final battle of 1804 between the native Tlingit people and the Russians. Alaska’s rich natural resources don’t just make for eye-popping vistas and adventurous activities; they also feed into a robust and unique culinary scene.

Visit Sheldon Jackson Museum

I had returned from St. Petersburg just before visiting Sitka, and the quality and variety of what this shop has to offer rivals anything I found in Russia. During the several days I spent in Sitka, I had the opportunity to try a number of the city’s restaurants. If you’re a seafood lover like me, you’ll appreciate all the fresh seafood that southeast Alaska has to offer. At the base camp, you’ll learn how to safely maneuver your tandem kayak, and you’ll suit up in the provided rain gear and personal flotation device. Kayakers then split into groups of no more than six, and glide across the water to follow their guide.

Still, it’s a good idea to get familiar with bear behavior, so you know what to do if you encounter one. Most major US cell phone companies offer coverage in downtown Sitka. If you venture out into the bay or remote areas of the island, however, service may be limited. Check with your provider before your trip to see where you’ll have coverage. Known by the locals as “Castle Hill,” this is one of the most important historical sites in all of Alaska.

Culture & Museums

things to do in sitka alaska from cruise ship

Aside from being one of the most beautiful places in Alaska, Sitka Sound has been a fishing paradise since the days of the Tlingits, who were one of the first groups to inhabit the area. Famous around the world for its sportfishing, Sitka Sound is also home to several varieties of Alaskan salmon and other species like halibut and rockfish. No experience is necessary, and kayakers can paddle at their own speed following a guide. On tour, you’ll learn about Sitka’s fauna and flora and can ask questions about this unique area. As you paddle along the coastline, you can see eagles in the treetops, humpbacks in the water, and bears foraging the shoreline for food. On my last Alaska cruise, we visited the Fortress of the Bears as part of a larger shore excursion.

See a Tlingit Native Dance

“Castle Hill,” as locals refer to it, is one of Alaska’s most important historical sites. The Tlingit Natives built the strategic fortification well before the Russian’s first visit, which later served as the location of Alaska’s land transfer from Russia to the United States. Before you leave, the gift shop proceeds go towards the rescue center and the support of these magnificent creatures.

The town has a ton of historical buildings and places of natural beauty that are free to visit. It’s a scenic five mile drive from downtown Sitka to this three-quarter acre bear rescue center. Run by bear-loving volunteers, visitors get a view from above of the bears in a natural habitat. There are half-hour guided tours that offer insight into the history of the rescue center. During my first visit to Sitka Alaska, cruise ships could only tender. Now, two ships can a day can dock at the new Sitka cruise port, six miles from town.

This is where my marine wildlife tour was starting from, and it was also the meeting point of my tour. I think I got off the ship a little over an hour after the announcement was made that we could leave the ship, and it was quick and easy to get off the ship and get on the shuttle to town. When exploring the town, we stumbled upon some small food stands set up just behind the Sitka Hotel and near Baranof Castle Hill. One was called The Fresh Fish and served up a halibut ceviche that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else than Alaska. It was a memorable meal and something we’d highly recommend to people wanting something local to eat while in town.

The oldest museum in Alaska also holds the honor of being the first concrete building in the state. Live performances are held in the summer months, with drumming and the chance to join native dance around the fire pit. The current Russian orthodox cathedral, with its green onion domes and golden crosses, is a replica of the original that was destroyed by a fire in 1966. Sitka is a beautiful small town on the west side of Baranof Island in southeastern Alaska. Feel free to simply browse but it will be difficult not to pick up some truly made-in-Sitka souvenirs. Some of these shops are Wintersong for lotions and unique gifts, Alaska Pure Sea Salt, 57 Peaks leggings.

Best of all, this top-rated cruise kayaks out farther in one direction by providing a cruise transfer return. Sitka offers RV parks, cabins and many camping areas located on and off the island. Equinox offers custom multiday adventure cruises based out of historic Sitka, Alaska. Tlingit dancers perform in connection with Sitka Tribal Tours and demonstrate traditional songs and dances passed down by generations. The Alaska Raptor Center rehabilitates injured birds and releases them back into the wild.

Several locally owned hotels and inns can be found in and close to the downtown area. There’s a variety of specialty lodging in Sitka including bed & breakfasts, cabins, vacation rentals, and cottages for a more intimate experience. Sitka is also home to a wide selection of oceanfront lodges that offer fishing charters.

Visitors can get a once-in-a-lifetime view of the bears from the safety of secure observation decks. And friendly guides are happy to share information on the bears and even the names and personalities of individual animals. One of the most popular attractions in Sitka is a visit to the Fortress of the Bear.

Stop for lunch at Ludwig’s Chowder Cart by the Sound Science Museum before heading to Sitka National Historical Park to hike the totem trail through the forest and along the beach. The protected bays and endless islands upon islands around Sitka make it an ideal kayaking location. Tides and currents can be wicked but you can trust your guide to keep you safe while seeing amazing scenery and wildlife. A variety of tours from a few hours to multiple days are an option. Prioritize getting to the rocky beach at low tide for the chance to explore tidepools and see sea stars and other colorful marine life up close. There is an island that is connected at low tide that has especially good tidepools.

As their mission statement says, they’re “dedicated to increasing understanding and awareness of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of Alaska through education and research”. Visitors can explore the Molly O. Ahlgren aquarium and reach into the touch tanks and feel some of the sea creatures that inhabit tidal pools. One of the few remaining buildings of Russian colonial architecture in North America, the log house was completed in 1842. It was home to the Russian Orthodox Church that presided over an area from California to Kamchatka in Siberia for over 125 years.

You could spot bald eagles perched watchfully in the trees, as well as sea lions and harbor seals bobbing in the water or hauled out on the rocks. As you paddle past the forested shoreline and rock-strewn beaches, your guide will point out the marine life. Look out for colorful sea stars, sea urchins, and scuttling crabs around the water’s edge. There’s no shortage of things to do in Sitka on land, but why not take things to the water? Water sports like kayaking will open your eyes to the majesty and scale of Sitka’s waters.

That said, the gold standard for travel identification is a passport book. A passport will work as an identifying document in all travel situations. If you already had a passport when you booked the cruise, you might think you have nothing to worry about. However, your passport also needs to meet certain requirements.

A Crash Course On Taking a Last-Minute Disney Cruise.

If you have an iPhone, one of the coolest things you can add to your Apple Wallet after check-in is your Port Arrival Form QR codes. This makes it extra easy to find those important QR codes you need when you get to the cruise terminal to embark on your Disney Cruise. It's not uncommon to get an error message that the website is experiencing complications during check-in. This is very frustrating when you feel like you're racing against the clock to get your earliest Port Arrival Time and have to do the steps sequentially as the app presents them. The caveat to the Port Arrival Time you get during check in is if you are taking DCL transportation from your Orlando-area hotel.

As an example of typical time for review, I received this “Check-In Finalized” email on February 19 for a sailing departing on March 4. There’s a lot of technical, legal info in the contract, but it makes sense to give it a read, particularly if you’re a first time guest or haven’t sailed in many years. You will also need to physically type in much of the information that exists on your documents. For example, you’ll need to type in your passport number as well as uploading a scan.

Just make sure that the photos you create are glare-free and all the information is legible. But we have heard that once you're at the port, you can simply ask someone who works there if they'll allow you to board as a group at the earlier boarding time. You can use a Passport Card to check in if you are traveling between the U.S. and Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and Bermuda, in lieu of a passport. You'll need a photo of every traveler's passport, taken one at a time (not a group photo of the passports). Alternatively, a Passport Card may be acceptable if you travel between the United States, Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.

Cruise Contract and Boarding Pass

Plus, there are new itineraries that will also visit exotic locations in the South Pacific such as Fiji, American Samoa, Sydney, and Auckland, just to name a few. These cruises travel to Iceland, United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Ireland, and other northern European countries. When your check-in forms have been successfully reviewed, you will receive an email notification.

Post navigation

Likewise, airlines can’t let you board without proper documents. If you’re flying to Vancouver or Europe and you’ve forgotten your passport, you’re not getting on the plane. However, if you are sailing from Vancouver to Alaska, you will need a passport if you are 16 or older. Those under 16 can do that sailing with a state-issued birth certificate, which works for land and sea crossings, but everyone who arrives in Canada by air from the U.S. would need a passport. The arrival form will state your port arrival time and boarding group, along with QR codes for your party members.

If you have a passport, then — without a doubt — upload that as your photo documentation. The most important thing to know about arriving at the terminal is that you can only arrive within your Port Arrival Time window. This is the 15-minute time block that you chose when you checked in. I always look forward to driving to Port Canaveral from Orlando and seeing that first glimpse of the iconic DCL cruise ship stack in the distance.

Disney occasionally offers sailings in these regions, and it’s a great way to see some new and amazing scenery. U.S. citizens arriving/departing by air in Canada will need a valid passport, and those arriving by land or sea (before the cruise begins) will need a passport card or Trusted Traveler Card. Legal permanent residents of the U.S. must provide a Green Card / Permanent Resident Card. Everyone boarding a Disney Cruise must provide proof of citizenship as well as a government-issued photo ID.  But do you need a passport, specifically?

You may find it helpful to have a second person hold the passport upright while you snap a picture, rather than laying it flat on a table. The only real advantage you might gain by checking in early is that you’ll have a better chance at snagging an early port arrival time if you’re among the first on your sailing to check in. For U.S. citizens, a birth certificate and government-issued ID are sufficient for closed-loop cruises. All guests will need their passports (or ID and proof of citizenship). When you check in, you’ll get a boarding number, your Key to the World cards and you’ll get your picture taken for your Disney Cruise account. The cruise agents will scan in your passport and/or your other identification documents, and you’ll keep these with you for the cruise.

Sea Savant is a comprehensive resource center specializing in cruises, offering detailed information and expert advice to assist travelers in planning their ideal cruise experience. Guests who are legal permanent residents of the US must present a valid original passport and a Permanent Resident Card to travel outside the US. If traveling by air to Canada, US Permanent Residents must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

☆ It's important to have all of the info above handy when you arrive at your Port of Embarkation too. Do not put them in any luggage you'll pass off to the crew curbside. In order to create the smoothest check-in process possible, we are also sharing what you need to have ready ahead of time. Additionally, we'll tell you the info we wish we knew in advance that will help you for your own Disney Cruise Line (DCL) check-in.

Here are all of the Disney Cruises where a passport is required for all guest. So if you plan on taking one of the the cruises below, be sure to have a passport that is valid for several months after your sailing. When check-in is complete, you’ll be issued a port arrival form. There are currently no COVID-related requirements to cruise and no COVID-related components of check-in.

They formed in 1979 in Kirkby, near Liverpool, Merseyside with a core of vocalist/keyboardist Gary Daly and guitarist Eddie Lundon. Their output was pop music similar in style to that of New Wave but with strong similarities to the post-punk movement of the early 1980s, namely inclusion of a broader range of musical influences and occasional flirtation with political commentary. Throughout their career, China Crisis has seen moderate success in the United Kingdom with ten hit singles between August 1982 and January 1987 and six albums, as well as commercial success in western Europe, Australia and the Americas.

About the Ship

Since 2019, he has also toured and played under the Men At Work banner with his LA based group of musicians, where he plays an exclusive Men At Work set, including all the hits and dearly loved songs which clearly have stood the test of time. Adding Gary "Gazza" Johnson (bass) and Kevin Wilkinson (drums) to the line-up, a second album, Working with Fire and Steel - Possible Pop Songs Volume Two, was released in November 1983. Tracks included the singles "Tragedy and Mystery" (released six months earlier) and "Hanna Hanna" as well as the title track, "Working With Fire & Steel", which became a hit single in Australia. The album was a Top 20 success in the UK, and China Crisis spent 1984 and 1985 making their biggest chart run, beginning with their only UK Top 10 hit single, "Wishful Thinking," which peaked at #9.

(To say that '80s sitcoms were light on concept is an understatement.) On The 80s Cruise, it's hilarious to go back in time and realize you -- yes, you! -- once worshipped at the altar of Madonna 1983 with mesh tank tops, lace gloves and tulle bows in your hair. Let's face it, the younger generation just doesn't party the way '80s kids did. Maybe it's the fact that we didn't have internet or social media. Or maybe it's because our parents didn't know where we were much of the time.

In 2017 Autograph released a new full-length Album on Megadeth's David Ellefson's EMP Label Group hitting #21 on the Billboard Classic Rock Sales Chart as well as placing 2 new singles on the top 10 Hard Rock Media base Radio Chart. It was in 1983 that Howard Jones first burst upon the contemporary music scene with his very English songwriting, pioneering synthesizers and thought-provoking lyrics. Australian psych-rock guitar masters The Church enter their fifth decade of making music with all the fierce creative energy of their early years. With new members introduced, the band are deep into recording the band’s 25th studio album, 40 years after their formation. In The Jam, Bruce Foxten and drummer Rick Buckler were the driving force, power and rhythm section behind singer, guitarist, and songwriter Paul Weller. Bruce’s versatility is evident, taking lead vocals on “David Watts” (The Kinks) and writing “News Of The World”, which to this day appears as the theme to the BBC’s Mock the Week show and has introduced his work to a new generation of fans.

The 80s Cruise Entertainment is Epic!

In 1991, Living Colour released the 6-song EP Biscuits, which coincided with the inaugural Lollapalooza tour. Stain, their third LP, was released in 1993, reaching No. 26 on the Billboard 200. This year you'll be joining the legendary Commodores, S.O.S Band, ZAPP, Sister Sledge, Peaches & Herb, the Original Lakeside, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Bloodstone, Lenny Williams, Mary Jane Girls ft. It spawned the singles "St Saviour Square" and "Red Letter Day," both achieving the lower reaches of the UK Singles Chart. Becker produced of most of the album's tracks, but this time was not credited as an official band member. In 1986, the band returned with What Price Paradise, which included "Arizona Sky," the album's first single release, and another Australian hit, "June Bride." A second single from the album Best Kept Secret made UK #36 in early 1987. Just two months after Live Aid, Midge was back at No. 1 in Britain, this time under his own name, with “If I Was,” and by the autumn he had a No. 2 solo album to accompany it, entitled The Gift.

Throwing the devil horns -- a habit of '80s heavy metal bands -- was also common. It's a little weird at first to walk onto a ship and see everyone within your same demographic. The 80s Cruise is almost entirely made up of passengers ages 40 to that means no kids, no millennials, no Greatest Generation.
